The Tobar Storm Kettle or ghillie kettle is an ingenious way to quickly heat water outdoors. Invented in Ireland around 100 years ago (with variations in use worldwide) the Storm Kettle has seen service in the Somme trenches, remote beaches, mountains, jungles and camp-sites.
It’s hollow walls are filled with water, a few twigs and dried grass and placed in the bottom and lit. By turning the kettle towards the wind, hot air is drawn up the kettle towards the aluminium centre.
By having a large surface area in contact with water the thermal transfer is far more efficient and the water boils within a few minutes. If more fuel is required it can be simply dropped though the top.
Not only is the Storm Kettle efficient, is a beautiful object that will bring a little military chic to your campsite.
