Watergate Bay Touring Park is located just four miles north of the busy hustle and bustle of Newquay in Cornwall.
As you drive towards Watergate Bay alongside the stunning coastline, you eventually come to a hill – once at the top the views are truly breathtaking and may require you to pull over in the lay by just to take it all in.
On entering the campsite you are greeted by warm and friendly reception staff that are on hand throughout the day for local information advice and queries. The reception area is also where you can hire all sorts of equipment from Surf Boards to Ice Blocks. The campsite offers numerous facilities including a heated indoor pool that is also an outdoor pool on those lovely summer days thanks to its opening glass roof!
If you have forgotten those all important camping necessities like baked beans the onsite shop will have it in stock or if you just can’t be bothered to light the gas stove (you are on holiday!) the onsite café and takeaway has a great choice of food at reasonable prices and fast service.
Camping in Newquay
The campsite is located just half a mile from the beach which is about a ten minute walk, although coming back is uphill and could be tricky if you have lots of picnic blankets and bags. You could take advantage of the campsites free mini-bus beach service which leaves and picks you up at set times of the day or alternately there is also a large car park nearer to the beach if you wanted to drive.
We decided one night to venture into Newquay for a meal and a few drinks. The reception helpfully informed us that a local bus service stops just outside the campsite. The bus takes about 15 minutes to arrive at the bus station in Newquay and then at the end of the night we easily managed to jump in a taxi and head back to our cozy canvas home!
Watergate Bay offers one of the UKs best surfing beaches with annual major surfing events taking place there each year. There is really no excuse not to get wet with the opportunity to have lessons and hire equipment from the shops on the beachfront! For the most confident surfer try heading down to the beach in the evening with friends and setting up a little bbq and hitting some sunset waves (bearing in mind that lifeguarding facilities finish at approx 6pm).
You can find a pub down by the beach called the Phoenix which is lovely and has a balcony to sit and enjoy the Cornish sun whilst having a drink or two – they also sell food. There is also the Living Space which is a bar right on the edge of the beach with stunning views of the whole bay and is slightly more of an intimate place to drink in the evenings.
If you fancy splashing out (but not in your wetsuit!) Watergate Bay is also home to the famous Jamie Oliver Restaurant Fifteen which has fantastic reviews.
Watergate Bay Campsite is a pretty much an all round fantastic site in a gorgeous part of the world offering every different type of camper their own perfect holiday.
